What is impact?
Impact is simply the influence or the effect of our actions on the world around us. And striving to achieve zero impact is about making sure that everything that you do as an individual and businesses does not harm the people, and the ecosystems where you live, work and play, as well as the environment that makes our planet sustain life. On the other hand, net positive impact would mean contributing to conserve the environment, shape an inclusive, prosperous society, and catalyse economic growth, all of which will help create a better future for you and the generations to come.
Why is it important?
As business leaders, understanding and managing impact would mean strengthening your reputation as a fair employer, growth partner, contributing member of the society, an efficient and purposeful business committed to profits. All this would contribute to your sustainability agenda, promising greater trust of your stakeholders and better performance.
As individuals, greater consciousness of how you are inadvertently harming the environment and the society can drive you to manage our impact to protect the future of your children, the people whom you love, and the communities you care about.
How do we measure it?
In measuring impact, we deploy Visser & Kymal’s Integrated Value Creation (IVC) Framework as a strategic tool, which helps to navigate the plethora of global guidelines, codes, and standards covering the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) responsibilities of business. We are trained and certified in a suite of sustainability and CSR tools.
Where do I start?
At the current stage of your growth and with your understanding of how business should function, achieving zero negative impact on the environment and society or a net positive impact may sound ambitious, far-fetched, and even counter-intuitive. But what if ‘Zero’ negative impact means happier, prosperous, and productive communities and thriving ecosystems that directly contribute to the success of your business?

What is your willingness to take corrective measures which will promote efficiency, create equitable opportunities, and fulfill responsibility towards your people and the environment where you operate?

Reflection
#5
What would it take for you to think zero impact for the benefit of your business and the survival of our people as well as our only planet?
